Daedalus and Icarus

Antonio Canova, Daedalus and Icarus, 1779, Venice, Museo Correr | Photo: Livioandronico2013 (Own Work) via Wikimedia Creative Commons

This sculpture is a masterpiece by the young Canova. The theme is a mythological one: it shows Daedalus intent on fixing wax wings onto his son Icarus to enable him to escape the labyrinth in which both have been imprisoned, before Icarus’s downfall when the wings melt from the heat of the Sun. The work, coming from Palazzo Pisani, constitutes a sort of metaphor for Canova's relationship with his grandfather Pasino, a skilled stonemason who recognized the grandson's extraordinary talent by sending the young Antonio to Venice to study.
