USA Pavilion – 59th International Art Exhibition | Simone Leigh: Sovereignty

Simone Leigh: Sovereignty | USA Pavilion - 59th International Art Exhibition, Venice, Giardini della Biennale

It is the natural elements and the archetypal and at the same time alien figures of the American Simone Leigh that animate the exhibition Simone Leigh: Sovereignty, organized by ICA Boston at the USA Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale. The evocative exhibition with the work Facade literally changes the face of the building's facade, built in 1930 with a neoclassical front that recalls the residence of Thomas Jefferson - third USA president - in Monticello, thanks to the project of the New York architecture firm Sinfonia Group and the creation of Cobar Spa. Outside and inside the pavilion stand out the imposing sculptures by Simone Leigh, unequivocal spokesmen of black female subjectivity, and of the themes dear to the artist such as gender, ethnicity and work filtered by history. In line with the philosophy of Leigh, the first African American woman to represent the USA at the Venice Biennale and winner of the Leone d'Oro 2022, Cobar has created an authentic "African" style touch roof, through a structure in wood and metal re-dressed of natural straw, referring to the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris. Inside, the dark tones and the real presence of water in the Last Garment installation, created for the pavilion in collaboration with Forme D'Acqua, welcome the visitor in a suspended, fluid time, emphasized by the choice of the black one-color.
