Antonello Viola, SANTO SPIRITO Island – Ultramarine Blue, Indigo, and Light Naples Yellow, 2023–2024, Oil, pencil, and gold leaf on glass, 2 elements, 70 × 110 cm | Courtesy Galleria Alessandro Casciaro, Bolzano | Venice
Curated by Elisabetta Barisoni, the exhibition brings together works on glass and Japanese paper created over the past four years, many of which are being presented for the first time. Inspired by the Venetian lagoon and its ever-changing landscape, the works combine layers of color, glazes, pigments, and gold leaf in a pared-down and meditative pictorial language. The fragile and transparent surfaces evoke a Venice in constant motion, amidst backdrops, waterfronts, and reflections. Viola, a student of Enzo Brunori and influenced by Constructivist abstraction, engages in a conceptual dialogue with the Symbolism of Giulio Aristide Sartorio, represented in the adjacent rooms. The exhibition thus becomes a reflection on time and painting as a form of spiritual experience.
