Luc Tuymans's exhibition at the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, promoted by the Benedictine Community and the Draiflessen Collection, marks the return of the Belgian painter to Venice, following a 2019 retrospective at Palazzo Grassi. The new paintings, inspired by fragments of the artist's visual memory, are part of a reflection on contemporary sacredness: suspended atmospheres, unusual colors, and ambiguous perspectives evoke the presence of the divine in the ordinary dimension of existence. The installation does not intend to reinterpret Tintoretto, but rather to explore the meaning of painting today in a living liturgical context. Tuymans will also create a contemporary illuminated manuscript for the monastic choir, continuing the collaboration between the Abbey and contemporary artists.
