Arshile Gorky: 1904-1948

Arshile Gorky, Il fegato è la cresta del gallo, 1944, Oil on canvas, 249.9 x 186.1 cm, Collection Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York Gift of Seymour H. Knox Jr., 1956 | Courtesy of Albright-Knox Art Gallery

The exhibition traces the stages of the surprising career of Arshile Gorky (Lake Van, Ottoman Anatolia, today Turkey, April 15, 1904 - Sherman, Connecticut - USA -, July 12, 1948) since the early work of the 1920s, when, very young exile fleeing from the Armenian genocide, he exercised an approach to painting strongly influenced by his first great master Cézanne. The exhibition explores the heights of self-taught research through the study of modern masters and movements, with paintings and incredible works on paper, which testify to Gorky's delightful hand, up to the achieved artistic maturity, characterized by a powerful and singular vision.
